Streaming Tonight: Gavin Bryars’ “The Sinking of the Titanic”

Apr

15

Today is the centennial anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, an event that has obsessed so many people for the last hundred years. Innovative composer Gavin Bryars is one of the many who have been fascinated by the unsinkable ship. His 1969 composition “The Sinking of the Titanic” has become a modern classic. It’s a loosely structured piece that will be performed by our own Ensemble LPR, featuring LPR co-founders David Handler and Justin Kantor, as well as members of the Wordless Music Orchestra, including composer/violinist Caleb Burhans. (You can read some of David Handler’s thoughts on the piece in our Staff Recommendation series.)

“The Sinking of the Titanic” will be performed twice tonight, once at 7:30pm and once at 10pm. We will be streaming both of these performances live online. As the piece is loosely structured it allows for slight variations to take place from performance to performance, and making each concert a unique experience. So, watch both and experience the same piece twice, differently.

You can watch the stream live in the player below, or you can head over to Concert Window and take part in the live chat. We will be on the chat to answer questions or talk about the piece.
