Masami Akita, who goes by the stage name Merzbow, spent about 75 minutes onstage at Le Poisson Rouge on Sunday night, generating a constant fusillade of sound: from two laptops, four digital-effects stompboxes and a homemade metallic contraption slung around his neck by a guitar strap.
It was about the size of a small rectangular purse, bulging with coils and amplified by a guitar cable; Mr. Akita rubbed a round metal canister against it to make it shriek. Whatever the source of the music, the concert sounded like a jet engine at close range, but as alive in its particulars as an organism seen through a microscope, with wriggling low-frequency figures that finally came to resemble melodies.
