“Yum’s The Word” is a new show that blends old-fashioned birthday parties with modern- day storytelling. Each month comedian and storyteller, Robin Gelfenbien, throws a party for an audience member replete with Mad Libs, balloon animals and homemade ice cream cakes. Join Robin and some of New York City’s best storytellers for a sweet and decadent night of juicy stories and treats.
Desiree Burch is a writer, comedian, storyteller and actress best known for her full-length solo shows–like Tar Baby and 52 Man Pickup–which have toured NY, L.A., San Francisco, Seattle, New Orleans, London, Amsterdam and Edinburgh. Her stand-up, emcee and solo work have been featured at Carolines, Gotham, Joe’s Pub, Bowery Ballroom, 59E59, Ars Nova, LaMama, P.S. 122, Dixon Place, the New Museum, and the Greene Space, as well as on VH1, MTV, Comedy Central, NBC and E4. She is a New York Neo-Futurist, an arts educator (American Place Theater), public speaker (TEDx), and a graduate of Yale University.
John Flynn has been performing, writing, and directing at the Upright Citizen’s Brigade since 2004. He’s a regular performer on Nights of Our Lives, and hosts the open mic storytelling show, Oh Hey Guys, every Thursday at the UCB’s East Village theater. He is the co-creator of Showgirls: The Best Movie Ever Made. Ever! His one man shows, Themepark Superstar and Dances With Pitchforks: Confessions of a Farm Boy, have been performed at Caroline’s Comedy Club, Joe’s Pub, the Upright Citizen’s Brigade Theater, and theaters in Los Angeles, Boston, and Key West, Florida. He is about to release his first comedy album, Faggot Munchkin.
Diana Spechler is the author of the novels Who By Fire and Skinny, and of stories in the New York Times, GQ, CNN Living, Esquire, New York, Paris Review, the Wall Street Journal, and elsewhere. She is also a four-time Moth StorySLAM winner and has been featured on NPR. A 2012-2013 LABA Fellow, she teaches writing in New York City and for Stanford University’s Online Writer’s Studio.
Jim O’Grady is a reporter for WNYC and has told stories on This American Life, Studio 360 and The Moth Podcast.
Robin has written jokes for emcee Rosie O’Donnell at The Matrix Awards where featured presenters included Martha Stewart, Rupert Murdoch and Hillary Rodham Clinton. Her original comedy songs have played on Sirius Satellite Radio and The Wiseguy Show hosted by Vinny “Big Pussy” Pastore. She’s been on VH1’s “Awesomely Badder Videos,” AMC’s “Liza Life Coach” with Cheri O’Teri, and she starred in a commercial directed by Spike Lee. She wrote and performed the critically-acclaimed solo show, “My Salvation Has a First Name (A Wienermobile Journey),” she has performed at The Moth, RISK! and Mortified, and she is the creator and host of the storytelling series, “Yum’s the Word.” Recently, she was featured in “Oy! Only Six? Why Not More? Six-Word Memoirs on Jewish Life” along with Henry Winkler and Larry David.
