Artists
This celebration is based on Joann and Antonio’s Afro-Latino roots, creating that “the way it was on the block” vibe they experienced growing up as New York Latinos (Neoyorquinos).
They pay homage to the music that influenced them as youngsters, and celebrates the newer music that echoes it. Their soundscape incorporates the wide range of their culture’s musical wealth, blending Afro-Cuban, Latino Tribal, Orisha chants and straight up percussive rhythms mixed in with old salsa classics and other lovely sounds that live inside them… house music.
“We are cultural and musical preservationists. We bring people together to honor our roots and pay homage to our ancestors through music, drum and dance. ¡WEPA! provides a foundation and shrine to experience the true meaning of tradition, joy and freedom.” – Joann Jimenez & Antonio Ocasio (WEPA NYC)

About Joann Jimenez:
Considered a maven of the New York City’s underground house circuit, Joann has been one of this city’s key event promoters, breathing new life into a dance scene that had been suffocated by cabaret and club laws. A native New Yorker of Dominican descent, Joann’s profound sensibility of various cultures has allowed her to produce groundbreaking events within the Latino, Caribbean, Brazilian, underground art and dance communities for over 10 years now. These happenings have truly preserved the traditional values of these cultures while engaging her audience in an educational experience that’s simply fun and inviting to be a part of. The authenticity of these events have brought together some of the most revered political and artistic leaders in a provocative celebration of its shared Afrocentric ancestry in various unique venues throughout NYC. Joann and her convivial crew of music lovers completely rebel with some of the most creative renegade parties New York has ever witnessed. Her unique style of multimedia club performances has inspired an entire generation of parties.
The musical vibrations of Antonio Ocasio thrives off of an infectious breed of raw Afro-Latin Jazz and deep house music. The heavy percussion and conga rhythms naturally speak to Antonio’s ancestral roots. His years of experience as a Producer and DJ have led to a lethal combination of ingenious musicianship and aspiring productions. As a prominent storyteller, Antonio pays homage to his upbringing by spinning tales of musical tradition and experience, taking the dancer through peaks and valleys, building anticipation with every turn of the record.
Oscar P is recognized as an innovator and force in New York City’s music scene. His musical style fuses his influences not only from NYC, but also Chicago and Detroit. Creating a unique sound that can be heard on remixes for artists like Foremost Poets, Gypsymen, Todd Terry, Physics, Marvin Gaye, Peech Boys, and The Beloved. Infamous for his aggressive music release schedule, Oscar’s projects are constantly popping up on Top 10 / Top 20 Traxsource sales charts. – via RA
