Ghost Wave

Ghost Wave are a four-piece rock band from Auckland, NZ with a sound that finds itself somewhere between the Flying Nun bands of the ‘80s, the British explosion of the ‘60s, and the wayfaring dubs of Lee “Scratch” Perry. Their debut lp, Ages, was recorded and produced by the band themselves around Auckland an mixed by Thomas Bell (The Clean, David Kilgour) in Dunedin, NZ. Ghost Wave’s album is the first release from the seminal New Zealand label Flying Nun since partnering with Captured Tracks in the U.S.

Streets of Laredo

Streets of Laredo are an indie folk outfit hailing from New Zealand, based in Brooklyn, NY. A family affair, Streets of Laredo is the newest musical incarnation of Daniel, David & Sarah Gibson, award winning photographer Si Moore & Tom Darlow.

Described as a “ram shackled family circus of gypsies & ragamuffins” Streets of Laredo truly embrace the spontaneity of live performance. Breaking down “the invisible wall” between the band & audience, Streets of Laredo like to create a “happening” rather than just another “gig”.

Although at its core Streets of Laredo are a quintet, you never quite know what you’ll get at a Streets show. Guest performers & collaborators (usually from their adopted home of Bushwick) are a common occurrence with the crowd being an active participant and contributor to the live experience.

Black City Lights

With dark voices, neon beats, and ghostly electronics that evoke the apocalyptic modernism of a 1980s Blade Runner, it may come as a surprise to learn that Black City Lights hail from the quiet bay city of Wellington, New Zealand. With traces of Austra, Zola Jesus, and The XX, their progressive and cinematic sound has already captured international attention in little over a year. Comprised of wunderkind producer Calum Robb and power-house vocalist Julia Catherine Parr, Black City Lights create soaring and spacious soundtracks to midnight drives, back-alley cigarettes, and regretful yeses. In March of 2012, Black City Lights released their debut EP Parallels via Brooklyn imprint Stars & Letters. Local and international accolades quickly followed, including copious blog coverage, high-profile support slots, and two prestigious New Zealand On Air grants to fund their videos. One of these projects, “Parallels,” was produced by the We Are The Masses production team, which also created videos for Passion Pit, Bon Iver, and Beach House. Having polished their live set by supporting the likes of Grimes, Baths, and Van She, Black City Lights are now kicking off a 3-month, coast-to-coast tour of the United States in September to support their debut album Another Life. With multiple confirmed dates in LA and New York—including CMJ showcases in October—Black City Lights is looking forward to taking American audiences on a style ride that is both chilling and exhilarating.

Tiny Ruins

Tiny Ruins is the project of New Zealand musician & songwriter Hollie Fullbrook which sprang from writing music for theatre productions in Wellington, dabbling in four-track recording and playing at live music and poetry nights.

In 2010 Tiny Ruins released the celebrated Some Were Meant for Sea album which received 4 stars in Mojo and sparkling reviews anywhere from Lesinrocks in France to the New Zealand Herald. A headline tour ensured and support slots with Beach House, Father John Misty, Joanna Newsom, the Middle East, Fleet Foxes and Sonny & the Sunsets.

The footnote EP to the Some Were Meant for Sea LP, Haunts, was released earlier this year. Q magazine said: ‘Fullbrook’s hushed yet forceful songs, packed with obsessives and resilient loners, demand your attention’. and the new release promises ten stunning new songs.

Tiny Ruins tours Australia & NZ in support of Calexico (USA) through September and in October visit North America for the first time. A new album ‘Brightly Painted One’ is scheduled for later in the year.

Eden Mulholland

Eden Mulholland’s take on the pop music of the future comes complete with strange voices, ripped apart rhythms, momentary flashes from ethereal orchestras, and all with a complete disregard for genre boundaries. It may well be that Eden’s less conventional path in music -‐ he formerly was a contemporary dancer -‐ has helped shape his experimental approach to composition.
