event description event description

Ecstatic and joyous music with two exciting Roma bands! Macedonia’s famed multi-generational 12-member Kočani Orkestar, one of the funkiest Balkan brass bands around, displays a thunderous trademark style that has made it one of the most popular Gypsy groups in Europe and the US. Acclaimed for its powerful rhythm section (drummer and four tubas) and passionate solos (sax, trumpet, clarinet, accordion), this celebrated ensemble performs music descended from Ottoman Empire army bands. The dance party will open with the intoxicating sounds of New York’s hot Sazet Band headed by the dynamite combination of clarinetist Sal Mamudoski and saxophonist Romeo Kurtali.

This program is being held in conjunction with the NYU Symposium on Romani Music and Self-Representation. For more information about the program go to www.ctmd.org
