Franz Nicolay is that mustachioed man-about-town and musician you may have seen with such groups as The Hold Steady and World/Inferno Friendship Society. He is the founder of new-music collective Anti-Social Music, and is working on a book for Vol. 1 Press.
Since its formation in Brooklyn in the late 1990s, Barbez has released five albums, each of them engineered and mixed by the incomparable Martin Bisi. The group’s previous record, Force of Light, released on John Zorn’s Tzadik label, was an homage to the Romanian-Jewish Holocaust poet Paul Celan and described by allmusic.com as “among the most profound settings of poetry in music.” Barbez has performed across the United States and Europe, most recently at the Festival Musicas do Mondo in Sines, Portugal, and collaborated frequently with the the experimental theatre director, filmmaker, and playwright, John Jesurun, a MacArthur “genius” grant winner, and the Bessie-award winning choreographer Juliette Mapp. Dan Kaufman (guitar), Peter Hess (clarinets), Danny Tunick (marimba, vibraphone) Catherine McRae (violin), Peter Lettre (bass), and John Bollinger (drums).
