With November 22nd, 2013 marking the centenary of composer Benjamin Britten’s birth, the Opera Institute at Rutgers mounts at LPR his most controversial, though considered by many, greatest opera – The Rape of Lucretia. Based upon the historic tale of an Etruscan Prince who rapes the chaste Lucretia (wife of the Roman General Collatinus) whose subsequent suicide sparks the revolution that established the Roman Republic. Britten’s setting is powerful, while also intimate in its use of a chamber orchestra of only 13 players and a cast of 8, creating an all too real immediacy as the “opposite poles of male violence and tender female intimacy are made so vividly real in purely musical terms, and brought into such horrifying proximity.”
