Goce Smilevski is a Macedonian novelist who has been described as “A young heir to Günter Grass and José Saramago…the newest of a rare thing—a living European novelist with a message for the future of his continent. Smilevski’s second novel, Freud’s Sister, is an investigation into the circumstances that led to Sigmund Freud leaving his sister Adolfina in Austria when he fled Nazi persecution. The winner of the European Union Book Prize, the novel has been described as a “gem of a book” by Publishers Weekly and “provocative and poignant” by Kirkus Reviews.
