DANIELLE EVA SCHWOB is a “genre-bending” (TimeOut NY) London-born composer, songwriter and guitarist whose work spans concert and popular idioms. A musician who grew up playing in bands as well as improvising and writing songs, she later found her way to concert music: a discovery that broadened and shaped her musical voice significantly. Nowadays she is equally at home in a concert hall setting or onstage at a rock club, her work across both genres characterized by a thoughtful demeanour, honest lyrics and intelligent arrangements.
Her music has been described as “dark and beautiful” (Consequence of Sound), “ominous…satisfyingly dark” (Sequenza21), “truly terrific” (WRIU 90.3FM) and an “emotional exorcism” (SonicScoop), and has been featured on NPR’s blog. Often noted for its thoughtful use of melody, it has also been broadcast on the Manhattan Neighborhood Network, WRIU 90.3FM and WVVY 93.7FM, earning her honours from the Aaron Copland Fund for Music, Con Edison, Exploring the Metropolis, MATA, the Margaret Sanders Foundation, NYU and MSU. Her talents have been featured at venues including Le Poisson Rouge, Galapagos Art Space, Joe’s Pub, Dixon Place, Issue Project Room and Spike Hill.
In 2012, Ms. Schwob was awarded a JFund commission from the American Composer Forum. The previous year, she was selected was a Con Edison Composer-In-Residence, working with her band and new music group, SYZYGY, to develop new arrangements of her rock songs for chamber ensemble. She has also worked with Philip Glass’ team as a guitarist/arranger for a forthcoming release of Mr. Glass’ vocal music on his label, Orange Mountain Music. Other recent and upcoming projects include performances of her work by New Amsterdam recording artists, the Janus Trio, as well as award-winning ensemble, The Nouveau Classical Project (at MATA’s Interval Series), and the Deviant Septet. In 2011 she released her debut EP, Overloaded, which was produced by Ido Zmishlany (Ryan Star, Lion of Ido, Gambit). She currently performs regularly in New York with her rock band and also serves as the Artistic Director of award-winning ensemble, SYZYGY New Music.
