"Down here below, the winds of change are blowing through the weary night. I prayed my soul would find me in the morning light." - Abbey Lincoln
A few weeks ago, a great voice and poet fell silent in the passing of Abbey Lincoln. On Monday, September 20th, some of New York City's most celebrated vocalists and songwriters will gather at Le Poisson Rouge to celebrate Ms. Lincoln's life through sound and word while illustrating the diverse musical trajectory that Ms. Lincoln's legacy lends to modern voice and song. Curated and produced by Somi, the evening will feature the voices of Tamar Kali, Gretchen Parlato, Imani Uzuri, Pyeng Threadgill, Charenee Wade, Maya Azucena, Keith Ailer, and Somi. Long time members of Ms. Lincoln's touring band, Marc Carey (piano) Rodney Kendricks (piano), Michael Bowie (bass), and Alvester Garnet (drums), will accompany the vocalists in an evening of music and memory.
Proceeds from the event will be donated to The Harlem School of the Arts in Abbey Lincoln's memorial. The Harlem School of the Arts offers children and young adults in Harlem and beyond the freedom to find and develop the artist, student, and citizen within themselves in an environment that emphasizes rigorous training, stimulates creativity, builds self-confidence, and adds a dimension of beauty to their lives.
