Join chef Dan Barber in a conversation on the food sustainability movement, and the way in which the arts can foster its presence. Barber’s philosophy combines old world farming wisdom with new agricultural technologies in order to create food that is at once delicious, innovative, healthy and environmentally responsible. Dan Barber now takes his sustainability advocation a step further by explaining the positive impact the arts can have on spreading these ideas to a wider audience. As Dan explains, “The issue of food and agriculture sustainability is currently attracting a tsunami of attention. Art can play a role in the next level of this movement.”

To demonstrate this unique collaboration, The Mirror Visions Ensemble performs sneak peek excerpts from know thy farmer™—a cantata by Richard Pearson Thomas set to a number of texts drawn from the menus of Blue Hill at Stone Barns Restaurant—which will receive its official world premiere on Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at Merkin Concert Hall.

Dan Barber, Executive Chef and Co-owner

In May of 2000, Dan opened Blue Hill restaurant with family members David and Laureen Barber.

Since then, his writings on food and agricultural policy have appeared in the New York Times, along with articles in Gourmet, The Nation, Saveur and Food & Wine Magazine. Dan’s efforts to create a consciousness around our everyday food choices have led him to the World Economic Forum’s 2010 annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland as well as to TED2010, where he looked toward a new ecological approach to cuisine.

Appointed by President Barack Obama to serve on the President’s Council on Physical Fitness, Sports and Nutrition, Dan continues the work that he began as a member of Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture's board of directors: to blur the line between the dining experience and the educational, bringing the principles of good farming directly to the table.

As chef and co-owner of Blue Hill and Blue Hill at Stone Barns, Dan has received the James Beard awards for Best Chef: New York City (2006) and for Outstanding Chef (2009). In 2009 he was named one of the world's most influential people in Time’s annual "Time 100".

Artists

The Mirror Visions Ensemble
The Mirror Visions Ensemble was founded in 1992 by Tobé Malawista, Richard Lalli and Scott Murphree. The initial interest, which continues to this day, was the back-to-back performance of multiple settings of a single text. This led to programs built around favorite poets: Shakespeare, Verlaine, Dickinson and Heine, in particular. Commissioning rapidly became an integral part of the ensemble’s mission, and, under Ms. Malawista’s guidance, The Mirror Visions Ensemble has commissioned more than 70 vocal chamber music works from 14 composers including Christopher Berg, Tom Cipullo, Russell Platt, Richard Pearson Thomas, and Yehudi Wyner. Over time, museums have become a home for Mirror Visions programs: during 2002-2003 the ensemble gave eight performances at the Musée Carnavalet in Paris, featuring a cantata by Christopher Berg on the letters of Madame de Sévigné with subsequent portraits in music organized at the Musée Nissim de Camondo and most recently, in collaboration with an exhibit on the artistry of jeweler René Lalique at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs.

The generous support of the Florence Gould Foundation has been vital to Mirror Visions’ success in France. In 2008, in recognition of her work with The Mirror Visions Ensemble, Artistic Director Tobé Malawista was named Chevalier of the Legion of Honor for her contributions to the culture of France – an award also presented to Steven Spielberg and Celine Dion.

VIRA SLYWOTZKY, The Mirror Visions Ensemble soprano was the USA Representative to the 2009 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition. She has performed at Seattle Opera, Chautauqua Opera, Boston Midsummer Opera and The Opera Company of the Highlands.

SCOTT MURPHREE, The Mirror Visions Ensemble tenor is a distinguished singer of the concert, recital and opera stage. Recent engagements include Utah Opera, Opera Delaware, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival. Additionally, he has appeared at Weill Recital Hall, Alice Tully Hall, the 92nd Street Y and Town Hall.

JESSE BLUMBERG, The Mirror Visions Ensemble baritone has recently made debuts at Boston Lyric Opera, Annapolis Opera, Pittsburgh Opera, and the Boston Early Music Festival. This season, he performed concerts with American Bach Soloists and Sacred Music in a Sacred Space, and gave song recitals in New York, Boston, Iowa, Michigan, and Florida.

RICHARD PEARSON THOMAS, pianist and featured composer know thy farmer™ has had works performed by the Boston Pops, Covent Garden Festival, Houston Grand Opera, Chautauqua Opera, Eugene O'Neill Theater Center, Banff Centre, Skylight Opera Theatre, and Riverside Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir. His songs have been sung in Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, Wigmore Hall, Joe's Pub, and before the U.S. Congress. His work with children was featured on CBS's "The Early Show," and singled out for praise by President Clinton.
