I Love Vinyl: Love X Love Edition

Description

I Love Vinyl present the Love X Love Edition Slow Jams, Lovesongs, and Lifesongs

*The ethos of the night is best expressed by I Love Vinyl resident dj/philosopher-king Ge-Ology:

"I would like to play anything that relates to love, regardless of tempo and genre....because real love isn't always pretty, perfect or neatly polished...nor is it predictable. I think whatever music we play should reflect this...should be just as varied and unpredictable as the many moods, lessons and manifestations that love often appear as. That's what makes love so confusing yet so exciting and fulfilling. Real love isn't always a fairytale...and sometimes you have to go through lots of heartache and lessons before you discover what it really is...or who that love will eventually be. Personally...I say fuck Valentines Day along with every other holiday, because really loving someone and being loved by someone is something far more special that should be appreciated every single day, or could be celebrated at any given moment...multiple times throughout the year and continuously during the lifetime of the relationship.

I think it suits us better if we don't define what we will be playing all night long...because it could become limiting, predictable and stale after a while. I'd rather let it be up to the individual to choose where we want to go music-wise and allow the songs we choose to say what we want to say in reference to love....thus keeping the possibilities of the night exciting to the ear, the body and the heart rather then going a more stereotypical, expected route. And I'm saying all of this not to rebel against love songs...because trust me, I LOVE slow jams and love songs...I miss hearing and playing them at parties like we used to do back in the day....but I'd prefer not only to play those, but other music as well throughout the course of the night, keeping people guessing...slow dancing, grinding, boogieing and whatever else the music inspires them to do. Feel me?

And who knows...maybe not everyone in attendance is involved in a relationship or are a couple...but instead, maybe they could end up meeting someone at our party, etc, etc. Whether they are in love, in pursuit of love, fell out of love, hate love or simply just love music...I want them all to enjoy themselves because I think this night could be very special."

If All The World Were A Blackbird

Description

Edina Tokodi: If All The World Were A Blackbird

February 15 through June 16, 2010

The Gallery at (Le) Poisson Rouge is pleased to announce the opening of its forthcoming exhibition If All the World Were a Blackbird by Eco-minded, Hungarian-born, Brooklyn, NY-based installation artist EDINA TOKODI, for her first solo exhibition.

This installation also marks The Gallery at LPR's first collaboration with The Wooster Collective, known for its 2006 partnership The Spring Street Initiative. The selection of Tokodi and collaboration between LPR and the Wooster Collective highlights the notion that fine art, no longer limited to white box norms, can embrace a new art-viewing environ, while underscoring the widely held understanding that street art is no longer limited to outdoor spaces. For the forthcoming exhibition in the Gallery at (Le) Poisson Rouge, If All the World Were a Blackbird, Edina Tokodi, one of today's leading green graffiti artists, will create original installations, transferring her public sculptural moss graffiti pieces - most recently seen around New York City as subtle exclamation points amid the concrete - from street to scene. Bringing nature to a most unexpected atmosphere, and breaking long-held gallery norms, Tokodi will transform the Gallery at (Le) Poisson Rouge: a space hailed as a multi-media environment where fine art, music and revelry intersect.

As a public artist, Edina Tokodi feels a sense of duty to draw attention to deficiencies in our everyday life. "I think that our distance from nature is already a cliche . . . I believe that if everyone had a garden of their own to cultivate, we would have a much more balanced relation to our territories," says Tokodi. "Of course," she continues "a garden can be many things." Her site-specific installations are inspired by Japanese Zen gardens and informed by the space's environs, whether organic or man-made; often sheathed in steel, glass, pavement and stone and providing an unavoidable contrast to its surroundings. Surrounded by their contrasting atmosphere, Tokodi's installations invite interaction, thus reclaiming the bond with nature. Unlike the market-driven art featured in sterile, white box galleries, Tokodi's is meant to be to be touched, felt, and organically effect the audience. Her animated installations playfully call to mind a more familiar, environmentally friendly state, breaking cold urban norms.

As a result of this exact notion, and influenced by a variety of textures, experiences, meetings, and readings, Tokodi's work gets reinvigorated, and herself inspired yet again to create. Whether walking the streets of New York City or interacting with its landmarks; in this circumstance the historic space that houses The Gallery at (Le) Poisson Rouge, Tokodi hopes to encountering a different set of media, art and people. With this, Tokodi's installation organically dovetails The Gallery's mission to foster community interaction, artistic stimulation and reigniting a renewed appreciation for the "public," as both notion and place: drinking establishment, art gallery and performance space. With If All the World Were a Blackbird, Tokodi tackles her most complicated endeavor yet, by continuing to explore the diversity of the intricate connections between (organic) materials while still remaining close to nature.

The title of the installation, If All the World Were a Blackbird, is inspired by a children's poems by Sándor Weöres (pronounced Voe-roesh), Hungary's "most versatile poet." Chosen by Tokodi for its complimenting the delicate nature of Tokodi's work while evoking a playful take on the Utopian existence.

Description

More about the show:
Jeff Mills:
There is a unique beauty in the motion of cycles. Like the spiraling of time we live in, this motion is unescapable. The convincing illusion that time restarts itself and allows us to begin again somehow feels like a rebirth. The classical composer Claude Debussy adapted this force in the cyclic method of 'rolling'. Born on the edge of Le Mer, he sublimely translates the incoming/outgoing motion of waves to piano arrangements. With a passion that rings a certain unspoken truth, his works have endure centuries, as they undeniably belong to reality itself.

This is a fact: Music without electricity is still music. The divisions of 'genre' that exists in music were designed for convenience for the listener. Genres were created to distinguish and sort between the vast ideas of music composers, this division was not in the original design of using sound as entertainment, but it was for reason of utility.

The idea of receiving a invitation from Kathleen Supove to participate in such a adventurous event is thrilling. It is a chance to object to the common notion that Music divides people. This division is something I look very much forward to exploring and is the shared task that the some Classical and Electronic Musicians are intent of dissolving as the trend of merging the two forms become more appreciated. Conveniently, looping is widely practiced in the world of Electronic Music and the merging of our ideas and impressions through the work of Claude Debussy is a practical decision I equate to nothing no less than substantial.

Kathleen Supové:
To me, the exploration of an intersection between Contemporary Classical and Techno music is more unusual than other kinds of crossover. Examples abound of classical with rock, or classical with jazz. But what about the kind of obsessive, personal fantasy that one constructs while standing (never mind dancing!) on the dance floor? How far are they from large-scale works of Philip Glass, John Adams, Charlemagne Palestine?

I've gotten this Debussy idea, in part, because he was a very early example of making a new kind of music and harmonic language that has been embraced in many musical worlds today. He had his obsessions that surfaced after travels to distant lands, some of them in his imagination.

In addition to the Debussy, or Debussy-like improvisations, I will add pieces that, in some way, reflect a sensibility or compositional process that is compatible with Techno.

Service Not Included

Description

Service Not Included features writers and comedians sharing funny anecdotes and horror stories about their experiences working in the service industry. Seasoned performers re-live some of the worst (or best) moments at their “day jobs” in what has become known as a humorous faux-educational program for those who have never needed to work in the service industry.

You’ll totally relate to some of the hilarious encounters that these former waiters, bartenders, retail workers and baristas have dealt with on a regular basis. They know exactly what it’s like to get the European table. Revenge is sweetest with a stage and a microphone.

Tackleberry & Mike McGill of WNYU’s A Downtown Affair have teamed up with Daniel Auster of NYC’s premier dance shop A1 Records for a new monthly get together at the Gallery Bar in Le Poisson Rouge. Equal parts disco, boogie, and house, Light Up The Night will be reaching back to the halcyon years of New York night music. From the underground sounds of private press studio sessions to the limelight of disco proper and the hand-over to Chicago, all aimed at rush hour traffic on the dance floor. Expect a program of choice selections, deep digs, and top flight DJs stopping by to share the love of a generation's prolific dance floor production. Stop by for a genuine, intimate D.I.S.C.O. experience!

I Love Vinyl

Description

Founded in the Summer of 2009, and without a doubt one of the best underground parties in the heart of gotham, Wax Poetics magazine, Halcyon, Raw Fusion, Great Weekend, and Fusicology, present this monthly all-vinyl oasis, featuring a dream team of resident romantics. Sharing deck duties are (six!) resident djs Amir (bbe), one half of the internationally known rare-record collector and mixtape duo, Kon & Amir; prolific beatsmith Ge-Ology (Female Fun), boasting remix credits from Pete Rock to PPP; The Twilite Tone (Great Weekend), both a key player in the seminal 90's Chicago house scene, and long-time producer and dj for Common; New York veterans OP! and Scribe (Raw Fusion NYC), and Jon Oliver (EVR), the baby of the bunch. The sounds are mind-wide, foot-friendly, and snap crackle popping. Anything is fair game, but you can expect to hear some soul, disco, dilla, boogie, hustle, hip-hop, old-school house, no wave, new jack swing, dancefloor jazz, bossa nova, salsa, funk, electro, and afrobeat. No pretentious bullshit, no dress code (not that you shouldn't come sexy as hell), no commercial radio crap, and no laptops allowed.

$5 (plus $5 well drinks b4 11pm)

The Luvely Rae's Insomnia

Description

From the producer of The Luvely Rae’s One Night Stand, Spice! a variety show, and Dirty Luv comes a new kind of late night dance party. Ciona Taylor Productions invites sleep deprived New Yorkers to stay up late at The Luvely Rae’s Insomnia a fun and funky booze fueled evening of random entertainment.

The last Sunday of every month, DJ Joey Nova spins the beats that will get you moving and grooving, while burlesque beauty The Luvely Rae delivers a bevy of ridiculous reasons to stay up late including: burlesque performers, sideshow artists, interviews with local celebs, sexy GoGo dancers, Connect Four. It’s New York’s only dance party that features naughty Twister with half naked strangers, and plenty of opportunities to win cash, booze, and other recession proof prizes.

The Luvely Rae takes it off every month and lends her choreography skills to Hunnie, Insomnia’s very own fly girls that are ready to set it off every show. Hunnie’s scantily clad cuties currently include: Chelle Cheri, Gitanilla, Lily Stitches and The Luvely Rae.

Come dressed in your Monday morning best: banker business suit, freelancer Pajamas with funky house shoes.
