"A Blessing on the Moon" is a new opera combining Andy Teirstein's fiery, folk-infused new music with the rhythms and "white voices" of the internationally renowned and Grammy-nominated Polish musicians, The Warsaw Village Band. They will be joined onstage by an accomplished singing cast of Broadway and opera singers. The opera, an adaptation of Joseph Skibell's award-winning novel, will premiere in Vancouver a week after the show at Le Poisson Rouge.
Praise for Warsaw Village Band:
"The Warsaw Village Band has revived traditional Polish roots music bringing forth the soul of Poland." - Erika Borsos on the album, People's Spring
"Poland's Warsaw Village Band may be a folk music sextet, but that doesn't mean it employs polite strumming and quaint melodies. ...This three-woman, three-man ensemble used violins, dulcimer, cello, Polish frame drum, marching band-style baraban drum, and high-pitched vocals to showcase the unique, raw style they referred to as Polish 'roots music from the ancient to the future.'" - Washington Post
"This is the sound of globalisation!" - New York Times Praise for Andy Teirstein:
"It all works, reminding us that political heat placed beneath art can sometimes burn it to a crisp... Andy Teirstein's vivid score is first rate..." - New York Times
"Rhythmically hypnotic, richly melodic... one of the finest pieces of music for dance I've heard." - The Village Voice

Ray Chen, violin: Downtown Virtuoso
Classical kickoff to fashion week
w/ music of Bach, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, and Saint Saëns
Classical kickoff to fashion week
w/ music of Bach, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, and Saint Saëns
Description
Program:
Bach: Chaconne
Brahms: Sonata no. 3
Tchaikovsky: Melodie
Saint-Saens: Introduction et Rondo Capriccioso
On Tuesday, February 7th, the fast-rising violin star Ray Chen, often referred to as “Downtown Virtuoso”, celebrates the worldwide release of his first-ever orchestral album with a rare New York City appearance at (Le) Poisson Rouge (158 Bleecker Street). “Classical music is often put on a pedestal and admired from afar”, says Ray Chen. “I love bringing it downtown, mixing it with fashion, digital technology, urban lifestyle, and – gasp! – pop culture. I love seeing my fans’ faces and making them smile.” This performance, featuring a selection of Ray Chen’s favorite works, will be streamed live nation-wide by NPR and internationally on his Facebook page which has thousands of followers across the globe.
The new album is released by Sony Masterworks as a follow-up to the critically acclaimed “Virtuoso”, an award-winning solo recording that propelled Ray Chen to international stardom in 2011. For this new record Ray teamed up with the Swedish Radio Orchestra and conductor Daniel Harding. It features two of the most famous Romantic masterpieces in the violin repertoire: the Tchaikovsky and the Mendelssohn (E minor) concertos. His interpretations of these works led to his triumph at the 2008 Yehudi Menuhin International Competition and the 2009 Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels. “These concertos are my lucky charms,” says Ray Chen. “Maybe I bring something new and fresh to them. Some say recording them is a huge milestone, and I felt ready for it.” Alongside his technical mastery, many critics are impressed with the maturity of Ray Chen’s playing. In the words of the Chicago Tribune: “He is an exceptional talent.”
